Is IVF bad for the environment?

Jun 6, 2022

The Fertility Podcast returns with its new series, Behind the Scenes of IVF and we’re starting a conversation about the IVF sector’s green credentials.  Did you know that almost 2.5 million IVF cycles are completed around the world every year and the number is constantly rising, so we wanted to ask can IVF go green?

There are a lot of single-use plastics – we heard about a study looking at cycles over a year,  which saw 69,500 consumables about 22,800 pieces of packaging but how easy is it for change to happen, if the healthcare sector as a whole uses these products, is the IVF sector likely to lead?  We spoke to people who are pushing forward for change, encouraging repurposing of things like glassware and suggesting smaller items be used, different practices adopted to reduce waste and gas consumption as well as plans to offset.

Within this episode, we also talked about the International IVF Initiative and a session they held called ‘How Green is your IVF’ which you can watch here and we also want to hear from you about whether you have given this any thought?

When there’s so much to get your head around when starting a treatment or choosing to change clinics if you’re going for another cycle, has the green issue crossed your mind?
